Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia Reginae and Nicolai)

A tough evergreen flowering plant that has very showy flowers in Spring of rich gold with blue markings and continue through to Autumn. A native of Sth Africa and also known as the Crane flower because it resembles a bright coloured bird in flight. Classed as one of the most beautiful exotic flowers. Its foliage is long, green, hard and waxy. There are 2 main varieties available, on being the smaller growing Reginae which flowers orange and purple and the large growing Nicolai whose flowers are white with purple.

An easy to grow, hard to kill plant that can also purify the air if kept indoors. It is an architectural looking plant with long, stiff, sword shaped, upright leaves usually green but can be marbled with grey patches or have white, cream and yellow stripes down the middle or edges of its thick stems. It got its common nick name of Mother in laws tongue because of its long, sharp shaped leaves. It is a dense, clumping, evergreen plant native to Africa, that spreads by underground rhizomes.
